Belt Conveyors for Food Processing

Belt conveyors are the backbone of most food production facilities. A continuous loop of material moves over a slider bed or rollers, carrying products from one stage to the next.

PU belts suit wet processing environments like meat and dairy lines. They are non-porous and hold up well against fats, oils, and cleaning agents.

Belt conveyors work well for bakery lines, fruit and vegetable sorting, and secondary packaging.

Modular Plastic Belt Conveyors

Modular belt conveyors use interlocking plastic segments to form a continuous surface. When a section wears out, individual modules swap out without replacing the entire belt.

Sprocket-driven rather than friction-driven, these are positive drive systems. Slippage in wet or greasy conditions is not an issue the way it is with standard belt conveyors.

The open-hinge design lets washdown water penetrate and flush out debris. For ultra-high-hygiene environments, clean-in-place compatibility is worth specifying separately from standard washdown resistance.

Standard modular conveyor belt designs have small crevices that harbor bacteria if the system is not built for thorough automated cleaning. Modular belts suit high-washdown environments including raw meat and seafood processing.

Wire Mesh and Stainless Steel Conveyors

Wire mesh conveyors handle conditions where standard belts break down. Stainless steel construction makes them suitable for oven tunnels, freezer lines, frying stations, and aggressive chemical washdowns.

The open mesh lets air circulate freely around the product. In cooling and drying applications, this makes a significant difference to throughput and product consistency.

Stainless steel grade matters more than most buyers realize. Grade 304 is standard, but grade 316 is necessary for acidic food products or facilities using high-concentration cleaning chemicals. Grade 304 corrodes under these conditions over time.

Wire mesh conveyors are standard in bakery, frying, and IQF production lines.

Screw Conveyors

Screw conveyors move granular and semi-fluid materials using a rotating helical blade inside a tube or trough. Horizontal, inclined, and vertical configurations are all possible.

The enclosed design keeps dust contained and protects ingredients during transfer. Dry ingredients like flour and sugar move efficiently, as do viscous materials like dough and slurries.

Slower screw speeds reduce product degradation. For delicate powders that break down under mechanical stress, getting the speed right matters as much as the conveyor type itself.

These systems are not suitable for fragile solid items. Direct contact with the blade crushes or damages products that cannot handle the mechanical action.

Vibratory Conveyors

Vibratory conveyors move products along an open trough using high-frequency, low-amplitude vibration. No moving parts sit in the product path, which makes cleaning straightforward compared to belt-based systems.

Screening and cooling can happen simultaneously with transport. On snack and frozen food lines, this removes the need for a separate processing stage.

Flat horizontal-motion variants produce a self-scrubbing effect that keeps seasoning residue from building up on the trough surface. Frozen foods, snacks, and delicate produce move well on vibratory systems without the surface damage that belt contact causes.

Pneumatic Conveyors

Pneumatic conveyors push or pull bulk materials through enclosed pipelines using air pressure or vacuum. Powders and dry ingredients stay fully enclosed during transfer, with no exposure to the surrounding environment.

Routing is flexible. Pipelines navigate around structural obstacles and equipment without the floor space constraints that fixed conveyor runs require.

Fine particles like flour, starch, and spices move well through these systems. Pipe condition needs regular monitoring because internal wear causes leaks that are not always visible from the outside.
